It’s $5 Friday

This month our Program Coordinator Urmilla has been busy helping Girls settle into school and making sure they stay there.

She often receives requests from school Principals when they identify Girls who are struggling and need some extra support – sometimes they are from families where parents are dealing with complex issues, so their daughter’s education falls to the bottom of their list of priorities.

One recent example is a Girl whose parents were going through a difficult separation. The parents decided to send her to Ba so she could stay with her aunty and continue her high school education, however after a few weeks her aunty realised that she needed help around the house and also needed someone to stay home and look after her own kids. Her niece was a perfect fit for these jobs –  so she stopped sending her to school.

Urmilla found out about this and knew it wasn’t good enough.

She helped find some family friends to care for the young Girl and moved her to a different high school where she was re-enrolled in Year 9. The young Girl was bright and very keen to continue her education, she was eager to learn and has settled in quickly.

Small donations can help make this happen – they can pay for temporary accommodation, a bus fare, or a new school uniform. Every little bit counts.
